Here at Phoenix Brickwork/Drywall/Scaffold, we are proud of every member of our team. Whether they're in the office or on-site, everyone works tirelessly to ensure that the overall stability and success of Phoenix is always at the highest level.
This week we have a very important member of Phoenix, whom without we would not be the #teamphoenix family that we are. Managing Director Christian Watson.
What was your background in the industry before Phoenix?
I was a sponsored student for Bowmer and Kirkland and trained to become a Quantity Surveyor for five years at Nottingham Trent University whilst working for my sponsor.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy playing golf (badly), walking up big hills and spending time with my family.
Have you got a favourite project or projects?
I have so many favourite projects, but the project which earned Phoenix early reputation as a Masonry contractor was, St Georges Park (FA / England Football Training Centre) in Burton on Trent for Bowmer and Kirkland. This was the first £500,000 project we undertook, 50% of our Annual turnover at the point of building! This project was where Malc Hancock and myself first met, a partnership that developed Phoenix for many years to come.
Do you have any funny stories that you'd like to share?
Not really a funny story but a random fact; to this day, I have still not laid a single brick in my life (despite Malc's best effort to get me on the trowel after my impressive stint of site labouring over the years...)
What would you say to those looking to get into the industry?
Do it. The Construction Industry has changed over the 17 years I have worked in it, IT’S not the male-dominated macho environment it used to be... a number of our Bricklayers get Botox and teeth whitening these days! There is a role to suit every skillset and with the right Employer, you will develop a skillset you enjoy and working will never become tiresome.
And finally, what does #teamPhoenix mean to you?
#teamPhoenix is about family to me; looking out for every member of the team, regardless of role, listening to the team when they have issues, celebrating their successes, whilst ultimately sharing the same goal – to be able to walk away from a quality project and to be proud of making it easier for the Phoenix Estimators to get the next project for repeat clients
